Limbering & Unlimbering Guns

I’m often asked questions about Combat HQ and thought that as well as replying directly, I would also post my answers here. If you have any questions or comments, you can add them below or email me at: jim@wargamesdesign.com

Question

Can an artillery type gun, like a Pak 40 or 57mm anti-tank gun unlimber and shoot in the same turn? And if you had enough Command Dice, could a unit be limbered or loaded onto transport, move then unload and shoot in the same turn?

Answer

Yes, there is no restriction on firing (other than being suppressed or having a fire marker).

Guns can unlimber and then fire.

Limbering/Unlimbering

  • Light & medium guns pay their Fixed Movement Rate to limber/unlimber. They may, therefore, move D6″ then unlimber, or limber then move 1D6″.
  • Heavy Guns require a full move to limber/unlimber.

Limber/Unlimbering with Double and Triple Move orders

With a Double Move, a light/medium gun could limber, then move D6″ on the first move. On the second move, it could move D6″ then unlimber. It would, therefore, move 2D6″ (average move = 7″)

On a Triple Move, a light/medium gun could limber, then move D6″ on the first move. On the second move, it could move 6+D6″. On the third move, it could move D6″ then unlimber. It would therefore move 6+3D6″ (average move = 17″).

A heavy gun requires a Triple move to limber (1st Move) then move (2nd Move) then unlimber (3rd Move).

Firing

Guns moving a Double Move are -1D when firing (same as any other moving unit). Guns moving a Triple Move are -2D when firing (same as any other moving unit).

Man-Handling Guns

  • Light Guns may be man-handled (prolonged) 1D6″.
  • Medium and heavy guns cannot be prolonged.
