Germany launched its invasion of France on 10 May 1940. The Germans attacked through Holland and Belgium and launched a surprise attack through the Ardennes. After heavy fighting, Commonwealth forces were forced to retreat from the continent. France signed an armistice with Germany on the 22 June – the Battle of France was over.
